Mission Statement

We provide a system where intervention and prosecution in cases of child abuse/neglect and victimization are more well-coordinated and effective in a child and family friendly environment which is less traumatic to children and which contributes to prevention and safety of all children.

History

In September 2002, the Commission on Children and Families convened a Family Violence Workgroup to address the impact of child abuse and neglect as well as adult domestic violence on children.  The group convened in response to studies showing the strong negative impact family violence has on children, resulting in children in the juvenile justice and foster care systems.  The Family Violence Workgroup examined local trends for children, current practice, identified effective approaches and made recommendations for improvement.  The group concluded the creation of a CAC would produce the most beneficial response.  The Family Violence Workgroup then became an Implementation Committee working towards the establishment of the CAC and applied for funding from the Virginia Department of Social Services to hire a Project Coordinator as well as other start-up costs and received a grant for the National Children’s Alliance to hire a case manager.
